Chapter Twenty-One

On the drive home, Sabrina worried over Geraldine’s parting goodbye.

“Say hello to that handsome architect of yours.”

Geraldine wasn’t the only wedding guest who lived out in this part of the island. Sabrina, and Nick, were likely to run into more of them at random moments. And, like Geraldine, they might bring up her and Nick’s supposed relationship, even in passing. Nick lived here. Word of his “relationship” might pop up in other aspects of his life, too.

They had a potential problem.

She’d assumed the charade would be a one day thing and they’d go back to just living their lives over the summer. No big deal. But he could hardly tell random wedding guests he bumped into that his “girlfriend”…wasn’t. Word of that would get back to Mr. Greene. And Anya. And while Sabrina thought the Anya situation might be more complicated than they knew, having Sabrina and Nick’s “relationship” revealed as an act wouldn’t endear either of them to the Greenes. Which would be very bad for Nick’s business and defeat the purpose of them pretending to be a couple in the first place.

She had to talk to Nick about all this.

But she was afraid to knock on his door. Afraid she’d forget why she was there and do something stupid—like try to kiss him again. She didn’t want to have a conversation about the kiss. She just wanted to sort out how they should react if they bumped into people from the wedding. She didn’t want to deal with him calling their kiss a mistake.

That was the crux of it all. The thing she’d been running away from all day. She didn’t want him to apologize and say it was a mistake. Yes, it would be better for them both to just move on. Probably. But she didn’t want to hear that from him. She didn’t want to have the memory of him calling that super hot kiss a mistake mixing with her memory of the super hot kiss.

So she sat in her car in Tabby’s driveway for a good ten minutes before she got out, took her purchases inside and put everything away, then stood in the hallway staring at the front door for another ten minutes, debating with herself. The dogs waited patently with her, Justin staring up at her, Princess cleaning her paws.

Finally, she pulled in a deep breath. “Put on your big girl pants and go talk to him,” she told herself sternly.

Justin pushed his head into her hand so she’d scratch him.

“Right.” She gave both dogs a parting scratch, then headed out, walking around the short hedge that separated her driveway from Nick’s and up to his front door.

She realized as she raised her hand to knock, she’d never seen the inside of his house before. In fact, she’d never been to his front door before. Her stomach did a funny tightening dance thing that made her regret that second large juice she’d picked up at the farmers market. Or maybe it was
